ENTRY TO LLOYD'S MARKET
Soon after graduating from university, I realised that I was interested in pursuing an actuarial career. I wanted to work in a challenging and interesting environment, and this is where Lloyd’s came into the picture. I remembered Lloyd’s of London from the UCL careers fair, and after further research, I was convinced that an actuarial career in the Lloyd’s market was the ideal path for me.
I was fortunate enough to secure a graduate role with R.J. Kiln, a highly regarded Lloyd’s managing agent that underwrites cutting edge risks ranging from windstorms and earthquakes, to cyber and political risk.
WHAT HAVE I DONE SINCE I JOINED?
I am currently on the graduate programme at Kiln, and I have been working here for about 5 months. During my first two weeks I was given a detailed induction into insurance in the London Market, and the opportunity to meet each of the underwriting teams at Kiln. I was also able to spend time at the Boxes in Lloyd’s with the Accident & Health, Aviation, Reinsurance and Syndicate 807 teams and learn how business is conducted in Lloyd’s.
I have recently joined the Reserving team, which is responsible for challenging the underwriters’ ultimate loss ratios and accounting technical provisions. Prior to this, I spent four months with the Capital Modelling team, which is responsible for estimating how much capital the company should hold.
In my short time at Kiln so far, I have been able to gain excellent exposure to the business and the Lloyd’s Market. I have been able to take ownership of a variety of interesting projects and add real value to the firm. Some of my projects have included modelling the company’s outwards reinsurance programme and helping build a model to replicate our 807 Syndicate. In both of these cases, I was able to sit down and talk directly with the other relevant teams to collaborate ideas. Furthermore, the flat structure at Kiln has allowed me to work with and learn from senior people in the company.
I have had a steep learning curve and been given a great amount of responsibility in a short period of time. Kiln is full of passionate people who take pride in what they do. Moreover, it has a very friendly and supportive culture. Although I’ve only been working here for a few months, I feel like I have been part of the company for much longer!
INTERESTS (INSIDE / OUTSIDE WORK)
I am currently studying for my actuarial exams, which has ended up taking a lot of my free time recently. The company has been very supportive by paying for all of my study materials and exams, giving me study leave, providing me with mentors and sending me to relevant workshops.
Kiln encourages a good work-life balance. In addition to generous gym discounts, the company provides great social events on a regular basis. Outside of work, I regularly play 5-aside football.
